To celebrate National Public Libraries Open Day on Saturday September 27th, Gorey Library is inviting people to ‘Take a Closer Look’ at all the services it has to offer, by taking part in a public library or digital library tour…
The nationwide campaign invites the public to explore the modern, inclusive, and vibrant services libraries offer today. It highlights the evolving role of libraries in Irish society as places of entertainment, learning, connection, creativity, and community support.
The public library tour is an opportunity to learn about the history of the library in Gorey, discover many of the services and events on offer, and pick up some great tips to help make you the most out of the library.
Learn about services like 3D printing, My Open Library, social groups, events, and the wide range of items available to borrow – including a Home Energy Saving Kit, Activator Poles for walking, Vinyl, video games, and sensory resources.
The digital library tour will guide participants through all the free resources available with your library card.

While most will be aware that the library offers access to free WiFi, computers and tablets, that’s just the beginning: There are also e-books, audiobooks, digital newspapers and magazines, music, movies, educational courses, language learning, and much more. There will also be an opportunity to learn how to order a book from anywhere in Ireland, or register online for library events.
Speaking in advance of National Public Libraries Open day, Executive Librarian Mary Kearney explained that the library welcomes people from all walks of life each day, with resources for all ages:
“If there’s ever a day to visit the library, it’s Saturday 27th September. We will have Lego for the kids in the morning, sensory hour from 4pm, our English Conversation Circle will be chatting from 2.30pm, as well as our one-off library and digital library tours. There’s something for everyone in the library – Take a Closer Look!”
Meanwhile, Stuart Hamilton, Head of Libraries Development at the Local Government Management Agency, told Wexford Weekly:
“Public libraries have evolved into vibrant community hubs that support learning, creativity, wellbeing, and connection. Beyond books, they offer access to IT services, digital tools, creative spaces, and inclusive programmes such as Right to Read, Summer Stars, Family Time at the Library, Literacy for All, Skills for Life, and digital lending services,” he said.

National Public Libraries Open Day takes place on Saturday 27th September. Gorey Library will host public library tours at 11am and 2.30pm, and digital library tours at 11.45am and 3.15pm. Book your space on the library’s Libcal page, or contact the library.
