Community invited to take part in ‘Walkshop’ for Make Way Day

People living in Gorey, regardless of their main mode of transport, are invited to take part in a community ‘walkshop’ hosted by Gorey Pedestrian and Cycling Association (GPCA) to mark Make Way Day this Friday…

Make Way Day is an annual event led by the Disability Federation of Ireland that brings the disability and wider community together to consider the needs of people with disabilities in shared public spaces.

Keeping our paths clear of obstructions like parked vehicles, wheelie bins, street furniture, and bicycles, helps people with disabilities to move around their community safely and independently. It also makes walking more safe and pleasant for everyone. It is a collective responsibility, so all are invited to come along on the walk – whether you mainly walk, drive, use a wheelchair or other mobility aid, scoot, or cycle.

We will depart from Gorey Civic Building at 11am, with tea and coffee from 10.30am. We will take a short walk through the town center, stopping at various points to explore how different areas might be made more accessible.

Last year’s walk was a very successful collaboration between the community and Wexford County Council. Along with raising awareness of how obstructions on paths impact people with reduced mobility or sight loss, the walk also helped to identify and bring about infrastructural improvements like the resurfacing of a damaged footpath. Their hope is that this year’s walk will keep building on this momentum.

If you are not able to take part in the walk, you can still raise awareness by taking photos of obstacles you see on the day and sharing them on social media with the hashtag #Makewayday25.

The Make Way Day Walkshop departs from Gorey Civic Building (Gorey Library) at 11am, with tea and coffee from 10.30am. All are welcome to attend.
