Kennedy hints at pro boxing event in Wexford this summer

A professional boxing event could be coming to Wexford…

There are currently three profesional boxers from Wexford. They include David Kennedy, Dean Walsh, and Dean Gonzalez Furlong.

David ‘Bomber’ Kennedy hails from Gorey town, while Walsh and Furlong are from Wexford town — with the latter doing most of his boxing out of Spain in recent times.

Speaking to Irish-Boxing.com after his recent win, Gorey boxer David Kennedy hinted at the possibility of a professional boxing event taking place in County Wexford:

“I’ve heard whispers that there’s going to be a show in Wexford late summer. Now look at — it’s whispers. So we’re just keeping the fingers crossed.”

““It’d be unbelievable. For me and Dean Walsh and Dean Furlong… the crowd alone for it would be unbelievable.”

The Gorey man brings a strong Wexford crowd everywhere he goes. Upwards of 150 people attended his pro debut in Dublin, and he brought another strong following on a five-hour journey to Ballybofey in Donegal for his latest fight, where he went 3-0.

Meanwhile, Walsh and Furlong both have strong support bases too — and there’s no doubt that it would be a sell-out. Along with boxing lovers, an event like this close to home would also appeal to the non-regulars and people looking to attend something different.

Last year, there was some talk about a card being potentially hosted at Wexford GAA’s stadium, Wexford Park — but it was probably too soon, with all three boxers just starting out their professional boxing careers.

Now, however, the three Wexford boxers are beginning to make bigger names of themselves in the pro ranks. Kennedy is 3-0, Walsh recently lost out to the BUI champion Daniel O’Sullivan on a split-decision, while Furlong remains unbeaten and is hoping to go 8-0 in his next headline bout in Spain.

Whether or not it will take place in Wexford Park remains to be seen, however, one thing is for sure: professional boxing will be coming to Wexford in the near future.
