Two Wexford boxers are currently over fighting at the European Championships…
The u-19 boxing championships, which is currently underway at Sport Hall Lagator in Loznica, Serbia, has seen Kalib Walshe (Wexford CBS) and Kayleigh Byrne (Gorey Boxing Club) represent their county and country with distinction.
Kalib Walshe claimed a European u-19 championship win recently over Israel’s Ilai Avraham 5-0. This has placed Walshe into a last 16 tie versus Tarik Huric of Bosnia Herzegovina.
Meanwhile, Gorey native Kayleigh Byrne stopped her Ukranian opponent three times in the final round to secure the win. This did not only secure a win, but it secured at least a Bronze medal for the young Gorey woman. She now marches into the semi-finals, with the Bronze medal guaranteed.
Her coaches from Gorey Boxing Club noted that after two rounds, there wasn’t much hope for Kayleigh — but the third round, where she forced a standing count on her opponent on three seperate occasions, guaranteed a remarkable combeback victory. Kayleigh will fight for a medal upgrade on Thursday.
There’s no doubt that the two young boxers are doing the County proud.
354 boxers from 36 nations are competing in Loznica, Serbia. The participating nations are: Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, England, Estonia, Finland, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Russia, Scotland, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and Ukraine.
