Two Wexford footballers are preparing for a memorable moment in their careers next month…
Wexford natives Leigh Whelan and Kallan Murphy are set to feature in the first round proper of the prestigious FA Cup next month.
Whelan, who plays for Marine FC, will face Bradford City away, while Murphy and Guiseley AFC are set to welcome Sutton United as both players look to help their respective sides progress in English football’s famous knockout competition.
Marine’s trip to Bradford City is scheduled for Saturday, November 7, with kick-off listed for 6pm. Meanwhile, Guiseley’s home tie against Sutton United is scheduled for the same day, with a 3pm kick-off.
Both players have already helped their teams negotiate the qualifying rounds to reach this stage of the competition, marking a significant achievement for the two Wexford natives.
Leigh and Kallan share an interesting connection, having both moved to England at the age of 17 to join Chesterfield FC’s Wexford Development Centre.
The centre has been running for the past 12 years, providing opportunities for young footballers from Wexford to develop their skills and pursue opportunities in the game.
The programme has operated under the guidance of Tucker O’Brien, Aileen Whelan, Jimmy O’Neill and Aaron Callaghan, helping young local players gain experience and exposure to the English football system.
Before making the move across the water, Leigh represented Bree United, while Kallan played with Enniscorthy Town.
Their journeys from local football in Wexford to the national spotlight of the FA Cup are a testament to their dedication and the opportunities that can emerge from youth development programmes.
The FA Cup is one of the most historic competitions in world football, offering non-league sides the opportunity to test themselves against clubs from higher divisions.
Leigh will be hoping to make his mark against Bradford City, while Kallan will be looking to help Guiseley take advantage of home support against Sutton United.
With both fixtures taking place on Saturday, November 7, it promises to be a special occasion for the players, their families and those who supported them during their early footballing days in Wexford.
It is a great achievement for two local lads who began their football journeys with clubs in their home county and are now preparing to take on the challenge of the FA Cup first round proper.
