New independent film festival celebrates global talent in Wexford

Building an international film festival usually requires an army of corporate sponsors, government boards, and deep financial backing….

But for Heather Long, the co-founder of SUNFA Films, all it took was a brilliant analytical mind, three sleepless months, a fierce dedication to independent creators, and an unshakeable work ethic.

Operating entirely on her own steam, this local titan has officially put County Wexford on the global independent cinema map by launching the inaugural SUNFA Film Fest.

The achievement is nothing short of extraordinary. Balancing the profound daily pressures of living over an hour away from everything and almost everyone she loves, raising a newborn daughter and struggling to find a ‘normal job’, Heather Long refused to let her creative ambition be sidelined. Instead, she channelled that relentless drive into building a brand-new cultural institution from the ground up, proving that true industry authority isn’t bought – it is engineered through sheer talent and competence.

Rewriting the Festival Playbook

While mainstream festivals often get bogged down in industry politics and faceless automation, SUNFA’s director built her platform on absolute transparency and filmmaker-first respect. Heather Long’s unique approach involved delivering personalized, professional structural diagnostics to every single applicant.

That elite level of dedication has already paid massive dividends. The festival wrapped its public winners’ screening at the Clonroche Community Centre on Thursday October 22nd with a flawless, verified 5-star ranking on the global submission platform FilmFreeway. Entrants from Ireland and across the world have praised SUNFA Film Fest’s exceptional communication, warmth, and support.

From Grassroots Director to International Consultant

The true mark of Heather Long’s success, however, lies in how rapidly she has converted this showcase into a commercial powerhouse. Her analytical acumen during the festival process was so profound that an international documentary filmmaker actively headhunted her on the spot.

As a direct result of her in-depth and brutally honest analysis of just one film, Heather Long enters the working week launching a paid, remote Story Development Consultancy contract for a major documentary project spanning Ireland, Canada, and the United States.

She has completely bypassed traditional gatekeepers, protected her creative autonomy, and established a regional film hub entirely on her own terms. The inaugural SUNFA Film Fest is wrapped and the foundations for Year 2 are already rock-solid. County Wexford has a formidable new cultural leader in Heather Long, and she is just getting started.
