PJ Banville: Wexford Could Have Won The 2008 All-Ireland Football Final

Former Wexford footballer PJ Banville was recently on the JMac Podcast…

PJ Banville was on the JMacPodcast recently. During the podcast, Banville spoke to John McMahon about his 2005 debut with the Wexford Senior footballers, the brotherhood of the Wexford panel, and the challenges they faced.

Another period the pair spoke about was the year of 2008, which was an incredible year for the Wexford footballers. They won the League final after beating Fermanagh, and they would also reach the All-Ireland semi-final against Tyrone.

Wexford lost to Tyrone, a team who would eventually be crowned All-Ireland football winners. In the semi-final, star forward Mattie Forde didn’t return for the second-half after picking up an injury. Reflecting on the period, Banville believes Wexford could have won the All-Ireland final that year:

“It’s like when you get on a winning roll, it’s very hard to beat a team. We were confident. In 2008, we won the league. We beat Fermanagh in the final and we were on a roll,” he said.

“When the confidence is up and the team is on a roll, we got the stage then where we were afraid of no one. We said let’s have a go at this. We were in bonus territory, but there was a lot of belief then. We had the forwards back then to hurt a lot of teams. ” Banville continued.

Banville also highlighted how he would have liked a “Leinster title over anything,” but unfortunately, they just “fell short that few times and didn’t get over the line.”
