Wexford Football Final Called Off For Bizarre Reason

An u-13 Coiste na nOg football final was due to take place this evening at Wexford Park…

An u13 Football final at Wexford Park between St Mary’s Maudlintown and the combined team of Our Lady’s Island and St Fintans

The game was an u-13 Division 5 Football Final, due to take place at 7:00 pm this evening at Wexford’s county grounds.

Both sets of teams had their warm ups complete and were ready to go.

Quite bizarrely though, the u-13 game had to be postponed because no goalposts were available for the game.

U-13s do not use the full-size pitch, and instead, smaller goalposts are needed.

The game has since been re-fixed for Monday 21st June at 7:00 pm in Wexford Park.

St Mary’s Maudlintown released a statement highlighting their frustration with Wexford’s Coiste na Nog.

“At 6:40pm both clubs were asked if they wanted to play full-length pitch with adult goals with five minutes scratched off for good measure. This is highly unfair on two teams who prepared over the last few weeks and were basically looking forward to playing out a county final for the past 8 months or so due to the covid-19 lockdown. Game may go ahead, no one knows when, under 15 championship is also meant to start next week. Embarrassing for all at coiste Na Nog level Co. Wexford,” they said via their official channels.

Meanwhile, others have also expressed their disappointment:

Wexford GAA have since released an apology.
