Young Wexford Native Gets Man Of The Match With DCU In Freshers Final

DCU were crowned Fresher Football Champions yesterday evening (Thursday)…

Dublin college, DCU, defeated Maynooth University in the Fresher A Football Final on a score-line of 2-12 to 0-12.

Above, Cian Hughes from the Kilanerin/Ballyfad club is pictured with his two grandfathers after the full-time whistle at SETU Waterford.

Cian Hughes was top scorer for DCU on the night scoring 1-04 from play.

Hughes’ progress has quite clearly been spotted by Wexford Senior Football manager, John Hegarty, who placed him on the match day Allianz League starting fifteen in previous encounters. Alongside that, when Hegarty was asked about any exciting prospects coming through the ranks – he named-dropped Cian Hughes as one to watch for the future.

Winning a Fresher’s All-Ireland and performing excellently with their college must be something that runs in the family though.

Cian’s brother, Paudie Hughes, who also plays on the Wexford Senior Football team, captained the DCU Sigerson team this year in semi final against UL and he won Fresher Footballer of the year back in 2020.

Also on the successful DCU Freshers team last night was Naomh Eanna’s Rian Fitzpatrick who was named at centre-back, while Jack Higgins from Castletown was named on the panel.

Eoin Blanchfield, also from Wexford, was the goalkeeper and the sole Wexford representative on the Maynooth University team.
