Darragh Egan weighs in on Wexford managerial position for next season

The highly-anticipated Wexford and Kilkenny Leinster Championship match took place in Chadwicks Wexford Park this afternoon….

It was do-or-die for Wexford as a loss would have seen them relegated to the Joe McDonagh Cup for 2024. Wexford emerged as two point victors in a pulsating and memorable game of hurling.

There were a number of talking points following the game including Liam Og’s goal, Cathal Dunbar’s sideline, and Lee Chin’s leadership.

Another talking point for fans leaving the stadium today which we have written about in a post-match article was Darragh Egan’s position. Will he be there next year? Or will Wexford seek a new manager?

Speaking to sports journalist Colm Keys of The Irish Independent, the Wexford hurling manager weighed in on the situation after today’s game:

“I don’t know. I don’t make the decisions. I absolutely love hurling. I absolutely love this group. I have my wife Sarah and the three boys at home and they are a massive support to me,” he said.

“I really think I have something to offer to whatever team I am with, but particularly this group of players. We have a good bond, we have built a good bond.”

“People have tried everything to break it between poor results and outside noise, but you know I really, really think I have something to offer.”

“No matter where I am next year I think I have something to offer the inter-county game and we will see how that pans out over the next few months,” he said to The Irish Independent.

Today’s result means that Wexford survive relegation and that they will be playing in the Leinster Championship next season, while Westmeath have been relegated.

Whether or not it means that Darragh Egan has saved his position as Wexford Senior hurling manager is a story for another day.
