A young Wexford man proved instrumental in winning the u-18 European pool championship yesterday….
The Wexford man involved, who can now proudly call himself a European champion, was Cushinstown local Denny Bookle.
The team was made up of Cillian Smyth, Shane Hopkins, Cathal McNamara, and Wexford native, Denny Bookle.
It was a race to eight frames in the European final. Interestingly, Ireland were down both 5-0 and 7-4 in the game, but the young team’s never-say-die attitude was really on show as they kept in the game.
Levelled at 7-7 apiece, it was down to the decider. Both teams needed one frame to win it. Ireland needed one more frame and it was Bookle’s time to shine in the decider for his country.

The team was led by Frank Fay, who has now led his second group of Irish youths to a major title in the world of pool.
Pool is alive and well in Wexford and Ireland. It’s not the first time that Wexford natives were pivotal in major title success. In 2023, a trio of Wexford natives were on the team that won the World 8-ball Championships.
