There was only a puck of the ball in it between Wexford and Kilkenny in Nowlan Park last weekend…
But it meant that Kilkenny were straight into the Leinster final, while Wexford were placed into an All-Ireland preliminary quarter-final.
Former inter-county hurler Malachy Travers and Kilkenny great, Eddie Brennan, were the most recent guests on The Wexford Hurling Podcast.
Although Wexford lost out to Kilkenny, there is still a lot to be positive about from a Wexford perspective:
“If you were looking at Wexford going into the round-robin, they have the artillery. The have a balance about them. I like Foley at full-back. He’s tidy and he’s not afraid to go up the field. They have some good subs to use too. There’s a lot for Rossi to build on. There’s a lot to be very optimistic about going into the Championship now, if they really believe it. They look to be in a good place. They’ve a nice blend in that team – he has brought some young lads into it and he’s integrated them nicely,” Brennan said.
“What would they be afraid of facing a Clare? Even a Limerick? What better way to find out what you’re about. What better way for Rossi to find out what he has in year 1, to see where this Wexford bunch are against the All-Ireland champions,” he said.
Also on the podcast was Malachy Travers, who highlighted the fact that Wexford players such as Liam Ryan, Dee O’Keeffe, and Jack O’Connor are back into the fray now.
“Every week, Wexford have a better panel,” he noted.
“The more often the younger players get the exposure, the better. There’s a lot to be positive about. What were we thinking after Antrim beat us in Corrigan Park? It was a disastrous year… but we’ve got what we deserved. It’s been a good development. And there’s a lot to be positive about.”
Wexford’s next match is not until All-Ireland preliminary quarter-final, where they will take on the Joe McDonagh runners-up, either Laois or Offaly. A win for Wexford will set up an All-Ireland quarter-final clash against the Munster finalists runner-up, either Limerick or Clare.
