Labour’s local area representative for South Wexford Damien Corish has called on the Government to to help people in South Wexford with the cost of living in Ireland..
Following the launch of a Labour Party survey to identify the pinch points associated with the continued increases in inflation, Corish said:
“Ireland is currently one of the most expensive countries to live in. With prices rising faster than wages and fixed incomes means people in South Wexford have less money in their pocket.
“In the last year the price of groceries has increased by 3%– and approximately 13% the year previous. Not only that, energy prices are still among the highest in Europe, and we all know the scarcity and price of housing in the district.
“Meanwhile, Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael tell us that we’re better off than we ever were. Yet the cost of living makes this impossible.
“Budget 2025 must focus on targeted investments in areas with the highest long-term benefits and biggest cost savings for families, such as housing, care, and climate transition.
“The people of Ireland deserve better than electioneering by a coalition government that seeks to bribe voters with their own money through tokenistic, one-off expenditures as happened in recent years. Such short-sighted measures will only serve to push up prices in the long run, exacerbating the very cost pressures we need to alleviate.
“The cost-of-living crisis has widened the gap between the have lots and have nots in society. It is the role of the Government to address this and improve the lives of everyone who calls Ireland home.”
