A key member of the Wexford hurling team is unsure if he will be part of the squad next year…
St Annes hurler and long-serving Wexford Senior hurling star, Liam Óg McGovern, is not making any decision yet about his inter-county future.
Speaking in an interview with SunSport, McGovern, who is now aged 33, said:
“Last year was a doubt. Coming into your 30s, you weigh it up at the start of the year. Once the body is good and you feel like you’re able to contribute, you have to see where you stand. I was delighted to go back once I had freshened up over the winter,” he said.
The Wexford Senior hurling championship is well and truly underway at the moment, and the St Annes player is not looking beyond that.
“We’ll see how things go for the rest of the club campaign. That’s the prime focus at the moment and a lot can change in a couple of months. I’m not making any decision beyond that for now. We’ll wait and see,” he said.
Wexford reached an All-Ireland quarter-final last year, losing out to eventual All-Ireland winners in that game. Despite some gruelling career injuries, McGovern has been a stand-out player for Wexford over the years and his loss would be seen as a huge blow for Keith Rossiter’s side.
Only this week, Wexford great Larry O’Gorman warned that Wexford could be on the edge of relegation to the Joe McDonagh Cup if some key players were to retire from the inter-county set-up.
