Wexford bakery and shop to close down at end of month

A Wexford bakery and shop is gearing up to close down at the end of the month…

Cooney’s Bakerty, located on Church Street in Enniscorthy in County Wexford, will be closing their doors to the public on January 31st 2025 after more than 3 decades in business.

The owners, Mervyn and Cathy Cooney, confirmed the news to the public on Wednesday afternoon.

Since 1991, Cooney’s traditional family bakery have been producing delicious baked goods for the people of Wexford and beyond. However, for health reasons, the couple have decided that the time is now right to step away from the business completely and close the doors:

“Due to age and health reasons we have taken the difficult decision to step away from this part of our business. This was not an easy choice but the right one for us at this time.”

“We want to acknowledge our wonderful staff both past and present and to thank them most sincerely for their fantastic contribution to our business. Through their bakery skills and dedication they made Cooney’s Bakery a household name throughout Co Wexford and beyond. To our customers, thank you for your support, loyalty and kindness since we first opened here in February 1991,” owners Mervyn and Cathy said.

Their café, located on Rafter Street, will remain open to the public, continuing as normal and their homemade bread and some confectionery lines will be stocked there after the 31st January.

The news of the closure of Cooney’s Bakery will come as both a shock and a blow to the people of Enniscorthy in particular, with the shope being a staple in the town for 35 years.
