Wexford Masters hurling team enjoy another victory with win over Limerick Masters

The Wexford Masters hurling team enjoyed another win on Saturday afternoon…

For team members selected, one rule is that players must be over 40-years of age, which in turn sees a lot of legends reeling back the years and playing the game.

Despite the big journey and the fact that it was an away clash, the Wexford Masters hurling team comprehensively defeated Limerick at Kilmalcolm GAA club.

The game finished on a score-line of 3-22 to 3-09 in favour of the Wexford men. It follows on from their impressive win over Kildare, which seen them rack up another big score-line, winning that game on a score-line of 5-22 to 1-08 in Kildare’s territory.

The team is managed by Rathnure clubman Dave Guiney, while Gorey’s David “Bomber” Kennedy and Padge “Skinner” Walsh of the Rapparees act as the team selectors.

Speaking to the team’s selector, David “Bomber” Kenendy after the game, he was delighted with how the team performed:

“We had some great performances all over the field. Some of the stand-out performers were Gizzy Lyng and John O’Connor in defence, while it was great to see Brendan Breen make a comeback too,” he told Wexford Weekly.

The competition is run on a League basis, with the top two teams placed into a Cup final and with the third and fourth placed teams placed into a Shield final.

The teams included in this year’s Masters Hurling Competition are: Wexford, Galway, Limerick, Cork, Tipperary, and Kildare.

Wexford’s next clash in the Master’s competition will be against Galway. This will be a home clash for the Yellowbellies, with fixture details still to be finalised.

Wexford’s opening two wins, against Kildare in Hawkfield GAA Club and then against Limerick on Saturday, will now likely put them into the final four, meaning that there is Cup or Shield silverware up for grabs.

The Wexford Masters hurling team are also looking for a sponsor to come on board to help kit them out for their remaining matches. They require shorts and socks. Any business willing to help should reach out to Dave Guiney (087-236-2685).
