Oulart into relegation final while Kevin Foley scores “one of greatest goals ever” in Wexford Park

Oulart The Ballagh have been placed into a relegation final of the Wexford Senior Hurling Championship…

13-time kingpins of Wexford hurling Oulart-The Ballagh could lose their Wexford Senior hurling status again.

It could be their second time being relegated in quick succession, also being relegated in 2021 before bouncing straight back up from Intermediate the following year.

They lost out to Rapparees in the Wexford Senior Hurling preliminary quarter final on Sunday, September 23rd.

The Rapparees came out worthy winners on a score-line of 4-15 to 2-13, avoiding a relegation final and being placed into the quarter-final of the Wexford SHC.

One of the major talking points of the game came from Wexford Senior hurler, Kevin Foley, scored what the commentators – Ed Rowsome and Peter Mernagh – believed to be “one of the greatest goals ever scored in Wexford Park.”

Leaping into the air, Foley caught the ball directly from a Rapparees puck-out at the mid-field line, before directly running at the goal, past three defenders to then bury the ball into the back of Oulart-The Ballagh’s net.

More notably, was the timing of Foley’s goal.

It came on the 57th minute mark when the teams were tied at 2-13 apiece. It was a moment for a leader to stand up and Foley rose to the occasion expertly, putting the Rapparees three ahead for the crucial last quarter of the match.

Interestingly, Crossabeg-Ballymurn also defeated Cloughbawn in the other preliminary quarter-final. It means that although Crossabeg and the Rapparees did not win any game from their group stages, they were not placed into a relegation final – and in fact – they still have a chance to win the whole championship.

Meanwhile, both Oulart-The Ballagh and Cloughbawn may feel hard done by, as victims of the newly incorporated system for the Wexford Senior Hurling Championship.

In related news, all of the Wexford Senior Hurling quarter-final pairings have also been confirmed, which can be found here.
