Young Wexford man starts podcast with long-term goal of getting a career in media

A young Wexford man has recently started a podcast of his own…

18-year old Rory Corrigan is from Blackwater in County Wexford. Rory is also a stand-up comedian and often does gigs at the local Corrigan’s Pub in Blackwater.

The name of his podcast is called “Rory’s Post Office” which is available to Spotify. Rory tells us that it’s a story-telling podcast which is a narrative approach to podcasting.

To date on the podcast, he has had an array of different guests. Some of his guests are not the typical guests that are on podcasts either.

Instead, Rory chats with people from all angles of life including “drug dealers, gun shop owners, and inventors” who have all featured on it so far. Just like one of his broadcasting inspirations, Charlie Bird, Rory isn’t afraid of asking the tough questions.

Similar to the Irish broadcasting legend, Rory enjoys challenging himself. Rory tells us the main reason he started the podcast was to challenge himself and to show off his talents:

“The reason I wanted to create a podcast was to prove to myself. I wanted to show off my talent and show what I’m capable of.”

Alongside broadcaster Bird, Rory has other inspirations in the world of podcasting too, which gives an insight into the style of his own podcast.

“We’ve different content but a big inspiration for me would be The Blind Boy podcast. I wanted to have a podcast because he did,” Rory told Wexford Weekly.

An ode to the guests that Rory has on his podcast is the fact that his uncle appeared on the podcast for the pilot episode and after listening to the episode, there’s no doubt that they are two wise guys.

This discussion with his uncle Pat – who owns Blackwater Golf course – was one of the best stories across all episodes so far, Rory tells us. Another one of his favourite episodes is Episode 3, which is where he chats with a man named Joseph, a local drug-dealer.

Rory has both short term and long term goals for his new podcast.

“A short term goal would be a bit more publicity; a bit more fame or whatever you want to call it,” he said.

To help with this added publicity, he has printed off stickers which include a QR code. Then, he has stuck them on random places around the county such as “street poles in housing estates”. When someone scans the QR code on their phone, they are redirected to his Spotify channel. These are all just small steps on his bigger journey and his ambitions though. Long term, he would like to work in media, but first, he knows that he has to build his own profile.

“A long term goal would be… I’d like to get a career out of it. I’d like to use this platform to work on other projects in media,” Rory said.

Running a podcast is not easy. For Rory, however, who is also now a Leaving Certificate student, his focus is clear and he knows what he wants:

“The schedule with the Leaving Cert and the comedy isn’t difficult. It’s not bad because I just prioritise my media work over the Leaving Cert,” he told Wexford Weekly.
