Lessons from sports that can help you dominate online poker

Online games are becoming more and more popular…

Many people turn to online gaming and online gambling as something fun to do in their spare time. One of the most popular games out there is, of course, online poker.

For others, it’s not just solely a game for fun though. There’s obviously money involved too and there are many people out there that look at online poker as a way to increase their funds, while also being able to enjoy an online game.  It is interesting that nearly all poker players nowadays earn a significant portion of their income from playing online which serves to highlight the popularity of online poker in recent times. It also showcases that opportunities do exist to make money, if the player possesses the right skills.

When your own money is on the line, it’s important to be able to think carefully and to think critically. There are many skills needed to be able to master the art of online poker too. For people in the Republic of Ireland, who are mad about sports, the skills learned from playing sports can definitely help them.

For example, Gaelic footballers and even viewers of Gaelic football may have developed a lot of patience. The game has taken a sharp turn and it has slowed down. And as the game has changed, the skills have changed too. One of the key skills now is patience. This is one trait needed to be able to become an excellent poker player too. It’s about making the most of the best opportunity. It’s about waiting for that moment and then pouncing on it when it’s the right moment.

The skills needed can be gained from a multitude of sports. Just like all individual and team sports, another key trait needed is to be very well-disciplined. For example, just like in a football match, you shouldn’t rush into a tackle against your opponent. It’s the same with poker. You can’t rush in, you need to be disciplined and wait for the best moment. This will give you the best opportunity to succeed – both in the sport, and in poker.

You simply cannot let your emotions get the better of you, or both you or your team will suffer. With online poker, it’s your bank balance that will be suffering if you don’t get on top of your emotions. You can never bet with your emotions. This is the same way you can’t play sports when your emotions are too high. With emotions that are too high, it’s only going to create additional un-needed problems that were avoidable.

Another thing that all good poker players need to be able to do is to be able to read their own cards. Have I got the best pair now? Can I get a flush here? Can my opponent beat me here? People playing online card games such as online poker need to have prior knowledge. This is the same with absolutely all sports. You’re not going to play a compete at a sport without any practice beforehand, so you shouldn’t do this with online games either. Practicing, and gaining knowledge about the best hands available to you, is absolutely vital, for all players.

Another good option, just to get the practice in, is to play free online poker games – or just play games for a couple of cent. At least then, if you’re losing, you’re never going to be losing a lot. At the same time, you can learn from that experience of losing and you’ll know where you need to improve.

On that note, another key skill for sportspeople is their willingness to improve. You wouldn’t go into a hurling match, or a tennis match, thinking you’re going to become the best straight away. You won’t win the All-Ireland hurling final, nor you won’t be playing at Wimbledon as soon as you start. You may never get to that pinnacle and that’s the same with online poker. Despite that, there are always opportunities to learn and improve. With a mindset like this – a mindset that values improvement and learning – then, you’ll simply become better and you will be able to utilise your skills down the line.

Regarding the actual game itself, one of the most important things is to be able to stay disciplined. This should start from the very beginning and you should set aside an amount that you are willing to lose and never bet beyond your own means. Sometimes, you need to stop too. Let’s say if you get an injury in a game. Are you going to continue? The same applies to online poker. If you’ve taken a blow, perhaps that’s the best time to stop then. There’ll be plenty more opportunities – or plenty more sports to partake in if it’s not for you.
