A Wexford Grandad overcame his fear to raise money for charity…
Grandad Peter, afraid of the sea, swims to the aid of charities raising over €200,000 over past three years.
During Covid and feeling quite helpless, Peter and his daughter Derbhaile, took to the sea off Cahore in Co. Wexford, for both their physical and mental wellbeing.
Peter is a self-confessed nervous sea swimmer, but he tells us “that is an understatement too”, really despising the sea as a child.
Gradually, he has taken to the sea like a duck to water, and now swims weekly to clear the head as much as to keep fit.
Over the past three years Peter along with over two hundred volunteers, family, and friends, have raised over €200,000.00 for Crumlin Children’s Hospital and LauraLynn Children’s Hospice, the only children’s hospice in the country.
Over the New Years weekend Big Splash for Little heroes has taken place at Old Bawn beach and attracts young and the young at heart to do this great dip in the cold sea while knowing all monies raised is vitally important to the work of LauraLynn Hospice.
Liz Quinn from LauraLynn has been blown away with the enormous success story that is Peter’s, his family, and friends.

Big Splash for Little Heroes will take place again in December. Will you take the plunge for LauraLynn? Your contribution will make an enormous difference to families who require respite care at these challenging time in their lives. Let’s make the most for their short but so precious lives.
