It is believed that some of the elder statesmen on the Wexford Senior hurling team are eyeing up retirement…
Ahead of the new inter-county season with the Wexford Senior hurling team, at least one member of the panel is considering retirement.
Matthew O’Hanlon, from the St James’ club, is considering retirement according to a recent article in the Irish Examiner with Wexford pundit, Tom Dempsey.
““Lee Chin (32) is probably one of the top three Wexford hurlers I’ve seen in my lifetime. He’s an amazing hurler. You have other great servants like Rory O’Connor (26), Matthew O’Hanlon (33), Liam Óg McGovern (33), Diarmuid O’Keeffe (32), and Kevin Foley (29), but when they start to step away I fear they will be hard to replace and my understanding is that Matthew O’Hanlon is possibly going to retire this year.

“A lot of those guys are in the 32/33 bracket and they will be a huge loss when they’re gone and very hard to replace, so that’s a worry. How we develop these younger players in the next few years is going to be very important,” Dempsey said.
Key Wexford defender Matt O’Hanlon acted as captain and co-captain over the last several years with the Wexford Senior hurling team.
One of his biggest achievements with the Wexford Senior hurling team was capturing the Bob O’Keeffe Cup – the Leinster title – back in 2019 after a titanic tussle with Kilkenny.
Although it is not yet confirmed by O’Hanlon or Wexford GAA, he would be a huge loss for Wexford as preparations are soon set to begin ahead of the new inter-county campaign.
In related Wexford hurling news, Wexford’s odds have been released to capture All-Ireland hurling silverware for 2025. Fans can dare to dream, with the reigning champions – Clare – only being viewed as third favourites in the eyes of the bookies.
