Wexford’s Byrne wins All-Ireland boxing title

A young Wexford boxer has won silverware…

In an All-Ireland national title fight, Gorey boxing club prodigy Kayleigh Byrne fought Jessica Gallagher of Mulhuddart in the final of the 52kg division. Byrne, who is just sixteen, has faced opponents older than her as she is fighting in the u-18 category.

Despite the step up in age, Byrne won her final this afternoon at the National Stadium by a unanimous decision on the judges scorecards.

The boxing at the National Stadium started today at 1pm, with all fighters hoping to come away with a National Youth Boxing title to their name. Two other Wexford boxers, Emily Midwinter and Patrick Kelly, were also looking to take home silverware on the biggest national stage.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t good news for Wexford boxer, and Rosslare boxing club representative, Emily Midwinter. Emily Midwinter of Rosslare lost out to Ava McCabe of Jobstown in the 46kg division.

Kelly’s (63.5kg) fight also took place at the National Stadium this evening, but he was runners-up to Louis Griffin who fought a hard fight.
