Wexford’s Kelly has eyes on National boxing silverware after making it through to final

A young Wexford boxer has his eyes on silverware…

Patrick Kelly, fighting in a popular division (63.5kg), made it through the prelims, the quarter-finals and then the semi-final stages on Saturday evening.

Patrick Kelly who fights out of St Abbans/ Kilmyshall beat Rahman Abdulnasser from Ballymun 5-0 on a unanimous decision in the semi-final stages.

Today, on Sunday, Patrick Kelly will be fighting Louis Griffin of Portlaoise boxing club. Both boxers will be bidding for national title silverware when they face off in front of each other in the ring at Dublin’s National Stadium. Kelly’s name came to prominence in both Wexford and national boxing circles last year when he entered into the World Junior Championships. He defeated a Mexican boxer and a Serbian national before losing out to an Afghan fighter in the quarter-final stages of the competition.

Meanwhile, in another national title fight, Gorey boxing club prodigy Kayleigh Byrne will be fighting Jessica Gallagher of Mulhuddart in the final of the 52kg division. Byrne, who is just sixteen, has faced opponents older than her as she is fighting in the u-18 category.

Lastly, Emily Midwinter of Rosslare will be taking on Ava McCabe of Jobstown in the 46kg division.

The boxing at the National Stadium takes place today at 1pm, with all fighters hoping to come away with a National Youth Boxing title to their name.
