Watch: Wexford goalkeeper pulls off two incredible quick-fire saves for university team

Multiple hurlers were representing Wexford across the Fitzgibbon Cup and the Ryan Cup which took place over the weekend…

Unfortunately, no Wexford representatives were victorious in bringing home the silverware in the Fitzgibbon Cup. Seven Wexford hurlers were on the DCU team which lost out to University of Limerick in the Fitzgibbon Cup, while none of the UL panel members hailed from Wexford.

Meanwhile, five Wexford hurlers were part of the TU Dublin team which lost out to the Garda College on Saturday afternoon too. One Wexford native, J Cooper (Naomh Éanna), was part of the Garda College team and started wing-back for the side.

One of the moments from the Ryan Cup match, which is the second-tier All-Ireland championship for universities, came when a member of the Garda College was rushing through on the goal.

In the goal, however, was Derry Mahon from Bunclody. The HWH Bunclody clubman, who was drafted into the Wexford Senior hurling panel at the start of the year, pulled off two excellent quick fire-saves. The first save was an acrobatic one whereby he pushed the ball away, but he had to react quickly as the ball fell nicely for another Garda attacker.

Mahon reaction’s were excellent though as he rushed out and put his body on the line to stop an almost guaranteed goal.

It’s not the fire time that a save from Derry has been a talking point on Wexford Weekly. In the 2023 Leinster u-20 semi-final, the young Bunclody man also pulled off an excellent save against Kilkenny to help Wexford progress into the Leinster final.

Results from Fitzgibbon Cup (F) and Ryan Cup (R):

F – UL 0-23 DCU 1-15

R – Garda College 0-19 TUD 1-13
