Kayleigh Byrne; it’s a name we’re going to hear a lot more of in the boxing world…
In an All-Ireland national title fight earlier this year, Gorey boxing club prodigy Kayleigh Byrne fought Jessica Gallagher of Mulhuddart in the final of the 52kg division. Byrne, who is just sixteen, has faced opponents older than her as she is fighting in the u-18 category.
Despite the step up in age, Byrne won her final at the National Stadium by a unanimous decision on the judges scorecards.
After claiming national silverware, the young Gorey boxer has since been selected on the Team Ireland amateur boxing squad for an upcoming tournament.
Kayleigh is the only boxer from Wexford who has been selected.
Along with 12 other Irish amateur boxers and the Team Ireland coaches, Kayleigh will travel to The Guildhall in Derry on March 1st, as Ireland will take on Wales in a Youth International. Team Ireland will be managed by Central Council’s John Gallagher, of 2 Castles Olympic BC, Tyrone.
Former professional Wexford boxer, Niall Kennedy, who hails from the same estate as Kayleigh, has said that Kayleigh is the “pride of Gorey boxing club.”
