Wexford boxer, Dean Gonzalez Furlong, is hoping to go all the way to the top…
In an interview published yesterday on YouTube by NI Boxing Tickets, Wexford’s Dean Gonzalez Furlong discussed a range of topics.
The Wexford native, who is residing in Spain, is 3-0 in the professional boxing ranks, making his debut in April of 2024. His last outing was his most impressive, knocking out his opponent – Sebastian Wojtan – within the first round on the Conlan Boxing card which was held in Waterford. It was a bout which seen “Speedy” live up to his name, but also show his class, noting that boxing is also “entertainment” – and that “boxers don’t get paid for overtime.”
One interesting comment that he made was about his future plans:
“I want to go all the way to the top. I’m not in this just to be recognised in Ireland or in Spain. I want to be world-level. I want to be a Superstar. However way I can build that path, I’m going to go for it,” he said with a touch of confidence.
“At the start of my career, after my debut, I said I’d like four fights in my boxing year. We’re doing that one now. Hopefully I’ll start my next Year 2 goal after this next fight,” he continued.
It is believed that the 22-year old Wexford man could be in action in Ireland again soon, but he didn’t give away any tips about which card he’s aiming for.
“I would be hoping that I’d be out before my boxing year ends. I’m not 100% so I can’t be letting stuff out. But I’ve been told to keep it in mind – and I should be boxing before my year ends,” he said.
It would not be out of the realms of possibility to see Gonzalez Furlong fighting on the undercard of the Croker-Donovan card, which is set to be held in Belfast on March 1st.
Reaching out to Dean after the interview for clarification, the Wexford man still couldn’t give anything away. But, one thing he wanted on the record was his appreciation and gratitude for Wexford. Specifically, he was thankful for Richard Hore, Wexford CBS, Pat Ryan and Portlaoise Boxing Club for their previous support in helping to sell tickets.
