Wexford’s Kayleigh Byrne wins Youth Boxing International with Team Ireland

It was a good weekend for Wexford boxing…

Kayleigh Byrne, who fights out of Gorey Boxing Club, travelled to Derry over the weekend as part of the Team Ireland boxing squad to take on Wales.

Ireland defeated Wales, 10 bouts to 4, following a scintillating night of boxing in a Youth International at the historic Guildhall.

Wexford’s Kayleigh Byrne, who is the current national champion in her weight class, was fighting Welsh champion, Skye Taylor.

Speaking after the fight and expressing their delight was Gorey Boxing Club:

Kayleigh boxed out of her skin to win comprehensively against a multiple times national champion of Wales – the very tall and skilful Skye Taylor. It was a brilliant performance from Kayleigh. There’s always room for improvement, but this girl is going places,” they said.

This was the first Youth international to take place since March 2023, when Ireland took on England in a dual nations following a training camp in Ballina, Co. Mayo.

The last Elite international, when Ireland met Ukraine, took place in Castlerea, Co. Roscommon, in April 2024, also following a training camp.

The full results from all the bouts can be viewed here.

Another Wexford boxer, Dean Walsh, also had success in the boxing ring this weekend. He had his hand raised after winning by a unanimous decision in his second pro boxing fight of his career.
