The Wexford footballers were promoted to Division 3 last week after their win over Wicklow in the Allianz Football League…
Wexford captain, Liam Coleman, made his return from a shoulder operation injury in that game which seen the Model County earn promotion.
The returning 25-year-old Coleman came on as a half-time substitute in that game.
Along with Coleman, another player that recently returned to the panel this year was HWH Bunclody club-man, Martin O’Connor.
Coleman was this week’s guest on the Love Wexford Town vodcast. Here, he spoke about the return of Martin O’Connor, who is travelling to training and matches from his workplace in Germany. O’Connor took a 2 year hiatus, before returning to the Wexford Senior football panel this year, despite still living and working in Germany.
“He made a huge impact on the group. It’s like he never went away. Even the way he’s played and even how he conducts himself. He’s never a massive talker, but he leads by behaviour – by example – the best of way of leading. He’s come right back in. I’d say he’s the only international inter-county player in the country right now, and that in itself, speaks loudly.”
“Managing a squad is very difficult. Questions would have arose. Was he physically able to make the commute? Would he be at the level? And would it upset the camp? But, for us, we’re a very competitive group, to get our best players on the pitch… and that decision was unanimous. He has justified it..”
“He’s just unbelievable. You couldn’t but be absolutely delighted to have him back. The commute is ridiculous but he does it without question. He was apprehensive coming back into the group… but it’s class to have him back and involved” captain Liam Coleman said, speaking to former Wexford football manager Shane Roche.
The Wexford Senior footballers will take on Tipperary in their second-last game of the group campaign. After that, they’ll face Longford before they go to Croke Park to take part in an Allianz League Division 4 final on Saturday 29th March.
