Wexford’s Larry O’Gorman was the most recent guest on The 2 Johnnies Podcast…
Along with being a Wexford 1996 All-Ireland winner and All-Star, the Wexford town man is known throughout Wexford for his comedic yearns and stories.
This was further evident when he appeared as the most recent guest on the hit podcast with The 2 Johnnies.
O’Gorman told a story about his playing time with the Wexford Senior hurlers in 2004, under new manager, John Conlan:
“In 2004, John Conlan, Martin Quigley, and Jim Kealy and these lads came in. He said ‘look it lads, we have to get these yokes on your back to see how your training is going and the progress… the GPS.’ You have to do so many runs per week and so many mileage per week. He was more or less saying ‘if you can’t do it Larry, you’re gone’. It was showing up when I was playing a couple of League games, I was getting nowhere. He said ‘Larry, you still have to get your numbers up’. So, what did I do? I went down to my local hurling pitch.”
“Benny, my little dog, come over here Benny. I put the yolk on him and I was hitting the hurling ball up and down the field. About 50 or 60 times. I said that mileage now should be up. I handed it back to Jim Kealy the following Tuesday night. I said ‘Jim, here’s my GPS’. He rang me the next day and said ‘Larry…you’re f***n Superman!’. I told him ‘Jim – I took a week off work and I ran my arse off’. And he said ‘Good man Larry boy – you’re back in’.”
