A young County Down boy travelled to Wexford over the weekend…
Nine year-old County Down boy, Jonah Kearney, is Wexford hurling’s newest fan.
In July 2024, Jonah’s aunty brought Jonah and his friend down to the Wexford Senior hurling championship so that he could see his hero, Lee Chin, play in person.
It was a secret for Jonah at the time. He didn’t know where he was going but he got an excellent surprise when he was told that he would get to witness Lee Chin play. Not just that, but he received pictures with Chin both before and after the game. After the game, the Faythe Harriers club had invited the young down man to attend a training with their Senior hurlers – which he also did.
Over the weekend, he travelled down once again. This time, it was to support the Wexford Senior hurlers and Lee Chin.
Once again, this was done in secret – and he didn’t know where he was going.
This was organised secretly by Bunclody woman, Clodagh Mahon. When arriving at Clodagh’s house, she told him that they’re going to watch Lee Chin and the Wexford Senior hurlers in the opening round of the Leinster Senior hurling championship against Antrim.

After enjoying the game – and witnessing a Wexford win against Antrim – he was able to take pictures once again with his hero Lee Chin. A number of other Wexford hurlers, including Chin’s Faythe Harriers clubmate, Richie Lawlor, also had time for a photo with the young County Down boy.

The weekend didn’t stop there for Jonah though.
On the return journey, they stopped in Croke Park. A tour of the GAA’s most famous stadium was on the cards.
And what did he make of the whole weekend?
“It was a weekend of dreams,” he said.
