A major fire occurred in Wexford on Sunday and is still ongoing…
The North Wexford community have been thanked as they helped – and are currently helping to extinguish the major fire on Tara Hill, just outsie of Gorey town.
The fire itself could be seen from miles away, including from those living in Gorey town.

Although the extent of the damage remains to be seen, the impact of the fire could have been disastrous if not for their quick-thinking and willingness to help.
“We also want to extend a huge thank you to our incredible local farming community. Last night, 15 local farmers worked tirelessly, drawing water from the Ahare river and nearby ponds. Their quick action and dedication were instrumental in helping to slow the spread of the fire. This is a true testament to the spirit of our community, and we are immensely grateful for everyone’s hard work and cooperation during this challenging time,” the Tara Hill Development Association said.

Emergency services from both Wexford and Wicklow attended the scene, with the fire continuing overnight. At the time of writing – Monday morning – the emergency services remain at the scene. The fire is under control, however, there are calls for the public to remain vigilant.
Wexford-Wicklow TD, noted that everything was being done to prevent any further damage and that the relevant emergency authorities were still attending the scene as of Monday morning at 8am.
“There are currently seven fire appliances from Wexford and Wicklow County Council on the Hill and there will be assessment later as to whether helicopter assistance will be required,” Malcom Byre stated.
Meanwhile, the Wexford County Council provided another further update at 10:02am on Monday morning.
“Five Fire Crews remain at the scene of a fire on Tara Hill in Gorey, which started at approximately 15.45 on Sunday afternoon.
The crews, from Gorey, Bunclody, Arklow and Carnew are currently keeping the fire under control, with assistance from Coillte, an Garda Siochána and local farmers through the supply of water tankers, traffic control and the creation of fire breaks in the area. A drone has been deployed to monitor the overall situation.
People living or working in the immediate area should remain indoors, close all doors and windows and switch off ventilation systems,” they said.
Local Gorey Councillor, Craig Doyle, was also quick to note thank the emergency services, fire crews, and community:
“I’m hoping and praying for as little damage to life and property as possible with the fire in Tara Hill. Fire crews and locals volunteering have been on site all night in attempts to keep the fire at bay. Hopefully their efforts are successful. Shows how vulnerable we are to the elements,” Cllr Craig Doyle said.
Videos and images of the fire have been shared widely online, specifically across the Wexford community. The cause of the fire is still unknown to the authorities.
