Wexford is one of the liveliest and most vibrant places to live in Ireland. There’s always a great night out waiting for you and a tasty local dining scene to sample.
People who like to play games are well-catered to here too, and there’s a handful of local casinos to visit. Online casinos are also available to players in Wexford and many include live table games to try. Sports is another standout feature of local life and this is especially true for GAA.
Wexford County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association, better known as simply Wexford GAA, helps to keep traditional Irish sports such as hurling and Gaelic football alive around the county. It has evolved into one of the strongest GAA county boards nationally. It continues to innovate in its approach to promoting Gaelic sports and attracting more people.
But what exciting developments has Wexford GAA introduced recently?
Plans for Phase 3 of Halo Tiles Centre of Excellence
Following completion of Phase 2 and backed by a €3.5m boost in Large Scale Sports Infrastructure Funding, Wexford GAA’s Centre of Excellence is moving into its final phase. This will include new dressing rooms, a state-of-the-art gym, floodlit 4G pitches, and a spectator stand.
The facility provides a central hub in Wexford for inter-county GAA teams to use, from underage club finals to senior levels. A partnership between Wexford GAA, the Ladies’ Gaelic Football Association (LGFA) and the Camogie Association means that all three will share the facility to boost Gaelic games, including hurling in Wexford. The final phase of the Centre of Excellence really is exciting and looks to be a tremendous development for the area.
Updates at Chadwicks Wexford Park
Another upcoming development for Wexford GAA is the Chadwicks Wexford Park facility. This includes upgrades to dressing rooms, better media facilities, more office space, and improved accessibility features.
This update is part of a broader €5m initiative aimed at bringing the county’s GAA facilities into the modern era. The development will provide a major boost for GAA within Wexford and provide high-level facilities for local teams to make use of.
Plans for grassroots sport by Wexford GAA
As is the case with any sport in Ireland, the grassroots of Wexford GAA are crucial for its future growth. This has led Wexford GAA to launch its own Coaching and Games Development Plan.
This innovative plan unifies efforts between schools and clubs to bring more young people into Gaelic football and hurling locally. It focuses on developing skills in younger players and promoting initiatives such as Hurling 365 or Cúl Camps. Each club in the county will have a dedicated coaching officer to facilitate this skill development with underage GAA players in Wexford.
Community projects led by local GAA clubs
In addition to large-scale plans made by Wexford GAA, exciting things are happening at local GAA in communities across the county.
Half Way House Bunclody GAA, for example, recently opened a new sports complex, in conjunction with its LGFA and Camogie Association counterparts. This new complex includes six dressing rooms, a top-class gym, community spaces, a video analysis suite, and more! These community projects by local Wexford GAA sides show a promising future for the sport in the county.
What impact could these developments have for GAA in Wexford?
There’s no doubt that the above developments are ushering in an exciting time for Wexford GAA. Large-scale investment in local facilities put them on the same level as top-class facilities in other counties, and should help Wexford sides become more competitive.
A focus on bringing younger players into GAA locally and improving the skill set of underage players will safeguard the future of traditional sports in Wexford too.
Time for change at Wexford GAA
There have been many developments lately for sport in Wexford and within Wexford GAA. This should help the county to become even more central to traditional sport in Ireland and continue to be a major force in GAA nationally.
