Two Wexford boxers selected with Team Ireland for Under 19 European Championships

Wednesday was a great day for two young Wexford boxers….

On Wednesday, two Wexford boxers learned that they were selected with Team Ireland to represent their country at the upcoming European Championships.

The European Championships will take place in at the at the Černá Louka Arena in Ostrava, Czech Republic from September 30th to October 10th 2025.

Gorey boxer, Kayleigh Byrne – who is still just 17 – has been selected with Team Ireland. She will be fighting in the 51kg division. Meanwhile, Kilmyshall boxer, Patrick Kelly, has also been selected on the team of 13 Irish boxers. Kelly will be fighting in the 70kg division. Both Byrne and Kelly recently won National titles, but they still needed to impress at Abbottstown to secure their place on the team with Team Ireland.

Speaking about their pride, the coaches at Gorey Boxing Club said:

“A massive congratulations to our Kayleigh Byrne who has been selected to represent her country in the Under 19 European Championships at the end of the month in Czech Republic. This is the first one being run by the new governing body World Boxing. Kayleigh at only 17 trained really hard and impressed the coaches at the Sports Ireland campus in Abbotstown over the last couple of weeks to ensure her selection. We are all so so proud of her and looking forward to her showcasing her talent against Europe’s best young boxers. Best of luck champ absolutely delighted for you. All your hard work is paying off. Go out and grab a medal now kiddo,” her coaches at Gorey Boxing Club said.

Kelly’s club, St. Abban’s Kilmyshall Boxing Club, echoed similar sentiments:

“Big congratulations to Patrick Kelly who represents his country in the European championships. Well done Patrick. We are all so proud of you,” they said.
