There’s good news for outdoor enthusiasts and walkers in North Wexford this week, with confirmation that a long-awaited project to improve safe access to Ballyfad Woods has secured significant funding…
Local TD Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin has announced that an application under the Outdoor Recreational Infrastructure Scheme has been successful, with €197,416 approved for the installation of a new footpath from Coolgreany village to the entrance of Ballyfad Woods.
“This is great news for those who use the beautiful Ballyfad Woods, especially walkers from Coolgreany,” Deputy Ó Súilleabháin said.
The funding will cover the first 600 metres of the pathway, with a second round of funding in 2026 hoped to complete the route on the approach to the woods.”
The Sinn Féin TD said this project has been a long-term priority.
“I first raised this in 2014, held meetings with engineers and staff in the area, and have been dealing with various interests to pursue this and the need for general road safety measures in Coolgreany ever since,” he explained.
Deputy Ó Súilleabháin emphasised his personal connection to the area:
“I have a particular love for Ballyfad Woods, and it’s essential that people can access them safely.”
He also paid tribute to those who helped bring the project to this stage:
“Huge credit is due to the Wexford County Council officials involved, including Rory O’Mahony. Also to Dr Yvonne O’Byrne, who prepared the application, Seán Lenehan who spearheaded the local Road Safety Group, the local community, and local councillors.”
The TD added that he will “continue to pursue the completion of this and other walking safety projects” across the county.
In further positive news, Deputy Ó Súilleabháin confirmed that works are also expected to commence after Christmas on a new footpath linking the Tara Vale up to Tara Hill, completing a safe walking route from the beach to the hill.
“All good news,” he said, adding that these projects will greatly enhance local amenities and road safety for walkers in North Wexford.
