Wexford impress with win over Longford in Inter-League

The Wexford U13s continued their impressive form, following up on their 1-0 win away to the Midlands in November with an impressive 2-1 win against Longford in Bunclody…

Wexford 2
Longford 1

The Wexford girls had the lion’s share of possession in a game where a well set-up Longford team defended resolutely, with their goalkeeper also making several good saves. Doris Spencer was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet in the first half for Wexford, with one of her attempts rattling the post. Longford also had some chances, with Vytaute Silinskaite in the Wexford goal making two excellent saves.

Half-time: 0-0

Grace White was introduced at half-time and the tempo was upped again by the Wexford girls. With 50 minutes on the clock, Leona Tobin played a lovely ball to the excellent Maisy O’Leary, who in turn found Blathnaid Fortune, who unleashed a strong shot only for the Longford keeper to save again. This time Grace was on hand to apply the finishing touch to give Wexford a well-deserved 1-0 lead.

Three minutes later, Wexford transitioned brilliantly when great defending from captain Zoe Roche and Anna Cleary resulted in Leona linking with Maisy, who played a one-two with Kayleigh Rowe and then swung a lovely ball across the box to Grace White, who made no mistake to make it 2-0.

Longford, however, refused to back down and pulled one back with three minutes left. In a heart-stopping last 60 seconds, captain fantastic Zoe Roche cleared a ball off the line and the final whistle went moments later, deservedly giving the Wexford girls the three points. This means they sit top of the table with six points from six as they head into their final league game away to Kilkenny at the beginning of February.
