Jack O’Connor has been announced as the new Wexford Senior hurling captain for the 2026 season….
O’Connor replaces Lee Chin in the role, a role that he fulfilled for almost a decade in the Purple and Gold jersey.
O’Connor was announced as the new captain after a stellar year with his club team St Martins, helping to guide his club to both a Wexford Senior hurling title and then a Leinster Club title too.
One pundit, Cyrill Farrell, weighed in on the decision by Wexford manager Keith Rossiter, raising a valid point while speaking to Colm Parkinson of The Smaller Fish Podcast:
“To me, they’ve made a very wise decision making Jack O’Connor captain. With Jack as captin, there would be a fair owl stretch… there’ll be a pull on Rory to come back from Australia for the Championship you see. I think it’s a wise decision by Rossiter,” Farrell said.
Farrell mentioned that because St Martins won the Wexford Senior hurling title, he may have been named captain.
However, host Colm Parkinson was quick to mention that this isn’t the case with Wexford captains, with Lee Chin captaining the side for the past seven years without winning a Wexford Senior hurling title.
“It’s clever from Keith Rossiter. But I think we can all see through it. At the same time, Jack is worthy. He put in some great performances for St Martins. He is a big character, he’s been around the block, and when he’s playing well, he’s top class,” Offaly’s Brian Carroll said.
O’Connor was also one of the four St Martins players named recently on the AIB Club Hurling Team of the Year, along side his brother Rory O’Connor, centre back Philip Dempsey, and wing back, Joe Barrett.
Jack O’Connor is currently recovering from injury — but it’s hoped that he will be leading the Wexford team come championship. In the meantime, vice-captain Damien Reck will be leading the team as captain.
