Prime Time will be broadcast on RTÉ 1 tonight highlighting an important issue in society…

Tonight, Thursday, on RTÉ One, a Prime Time a report will examine how the majority of people living with a disability in Ireland are cared for by their parents. Tonight’s programme will feature a family from South Wexford.

TheJohnstone family of Jane, Evan and Daniel from Baldwinstown in Wexford will feature in the programme. Jane is the primary carer for both Evan and Daniel, who both have complex and special needs.

Over 5,000 parents, 38% of all carers, are now over the age of 60.

Of these, 1,565 are over 70, and a further 500 are over 80, all continuing to care for their adult children with disabilities.

This piece looks at why aging parents, who struggle to cope, fear they will die before their adult child gains access to an appropriate a residential care place.
