Here’s how Declan Ruth thinks the Wexford Senior hurlers will do this year

The Wexford Senior hurlers will return to action this weekend when they take on Kildare…

This Saturday evening will be the opening round of the Leinster Senior hurling championship for Wexford and already, there’s an excitement in the air ahead of the opening round.

Speaking ahead of this weekend’s game to the Wexford Hurling Podcast was former Wexford hurler, Declan ‘Skippy’ Ruth. At the end of the podcast, the Rapparees man shared how he thinks the Wexford Senior hurlers will fare out this year.

The Rapparees man enjoyed a lenghty career with the Wexford Senior hurling team himself, being a rock in the defence for countless years before moving onto management — leading his home club, the Rapparees, to their second-ever Wexford Senior Hurling title back in 2021.

Speaking to the Wexford Hurling Podcast, Declan Ruth said:

“I would be going for a third-placed finish. If we had all of our players available, if everyone was there and was fully fit, I think we could get to a Leinster final. But, we’re still missing some vital players – even if they make one or two games, they’re not going to make them all. I think we could beat Dublin or Galway at home — and Kilkenny, we do have a chance, but going away is always difficult. I think we’ll finish third and we’ll sneak into the All-Ireland series.”

“I think the best expectation is probably an All-Ireland quarter-final defeat for us. Would we take that rightn now? Yes, we would… But when you get to an All-Ireland quarter-final, you want to win it but it’d be a tough ask — and the thing is to get there,” the former Wexford centre-back said.
