Blow for Wexford Senior footballers ahead of Tailteann Cup decider

John Hegarty’s Wexford Senior Footballers will return to Tailteann Cup action this weekend when they take on Leitrim (away).

It’s a do-or-die decider both both teams in the competition.

Wexford will be preparing without one of their key attackers for the crucial clash.

Sean Nolan, one of the star players from last year’s competition, will be sidelined for the next 9-10 months after picking up a serious injury.

The Wexford attacker suffered the dreaded Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury and will now undergo surgery and extensive rehab to return to the playing field.

The Irish Independent broke the news of an injury blow last week, but it has since been confirmed that the forward has torn his ACL in Wexford’s most recent loss to Fermanagh.

“Sean has been a huge player for us for the last couple of years and a really important member of the panel. He was playing really well in Fermanagh. We knew it was a signficant injury — but the full extent of it was only realised after the scan. It is a cruciate injury and anybody knows about these things, it’s not what you want to hear.”

“He’s a resilient character, and his focus will be getting on the operation and getting into rehab. It’s a long road. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone — but Sean will be fully equipped to do the work and get back to the pitch for the Purple and Gold,” John Hegarty said about the injury.

Both Leitrim and Wexford require a win to advance into the next round of the Tailteann Cup.

Although Wexford had secured promotion to Divison 2 of the Allianz Football League, they have failed to kick on in the Tailteann Cup. A win against Leitrim would put them back on the right track though — but it won’t be an easy task, especially with it being away from home too.

The Leitrim v Wexford clash takes place at 2pm, Heartland Credit Union Páirc Seán Mac Diarmada (Leitrim) on Saturday, June 6.
