A local councillor has condemned what he described as a “sickening” act of vandalism after 18 gravestones were damaged in Wexford…
Cllr. Jim Codd said he was left “horrified” after visiting the at Monachán Graveyard in Taghmon and witnessing the extent of the destruction, which included gravestones being broken, smashed and pulled from the ground.
“I have often been contacted about anti-social behaviour. I have spoken out against drug dealers and thuggery of various types in Wexford, but I was never so sickened and so annoyed at what I saw in The Monachán Graveyard in Taghmon today,” Cllr. Jim Codd said.
According to the councillor, a total of 18 gravestones were damaged during the incident. Heavy stone borders were also pulled out, while a cast iron cross was smashed from a wall.
“What has happened to our society? This is not the actions of children. Two men would be busy with a sledgehammer to complete this attack on our Christian burial grounds,” he said.
Describing the damage as an attack not only on the cemetery but on the community’s shared heritage, Cllr. Codd appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
“I write this simply horrified. If you have any information, please let the Gardaí in Taghmon or myself know,” he said.
“These gravestones are our very history. We will not be standing for this desecration of our beliefs, our history, our heritage. These are the resting places of our loved ones.”
Anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area or who has information that could assist the investigation is asked to contact Taghmon Garda Station.
