Duncannon Beach in County Wexford has been issued with the warning, with members of the public being urged not to enter the water until the warning has been lifted.
Wexford County Council has advised the public that the bathing prohibition follows the results of the latest routine bathing water quality monitoring at the popular south Wexford beach.
The latest tests found elevated levels of bacteria in the bathing water, prompting the Council to issue the notice following consultation with the Health Service Executive (HSE) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The measure has been introduced as a precaution to protect public health.
The Council has confirmed that further samples have now been taken from the beach, with the results expected on Thursday, August 13. The bathing prohibition will then be reviewed based on the latest test results.
An Environmental Technical Team is also investigating the matter.
Anyone visiting Duncannon Beach is being asked to take the warning seriously and to follow the public notices and not swim in the water while the prohibition remains in place.
The notice comes during the busy summer bathing season, when Duncannon is a popular destination for locals and visitors enjoying Wexford’s coastline.
The warning is particularly notable given that Duncannon Beach regained its Blue Flag status for 2026, having achieved the accolade for the first time since 2007 following improvements in bathing water quality.
Wexford County Council has stressed that it will provide further information when the situation is reviewed and the “Do Not Swim” notice is lifted.
