A Wexford teenager is celebrating another major success after being crowned All-Ireland Skateboarding Champion for the second consecutive year…
Donatas Budrys took first place at the All-Ireland Nationals in Limerick on Saturday, 8 August, securing the national title for the second year in a row.
The victory comes during an outstanding summer for the young Wexford skateboarder. On 18 July, Donatas also finished in first place at a competition in Belfast, again claiming the top spot for the second consecutive year.
Behind the impressive results is a huge commitment to skateboarding, with Donatas regularly training at Min Ryan Skatepark alongside a group of other young skaters from Wexford.
The group travel throughout Ireland to compete and also take part in competitions abroad, gaining valuable experience while representing Wexford on the skateboarding scene.
For the young athletes involved, competing at this level requires significant dedication, with regular training and travelling often forming a major part of their lives.
Skateboarding has also grown significantly on the international sporting stage and is now an Olympic sport, having made its Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020. However, there is still relatively little coverage of the young athletes competing in the sport at local and national level in Ireland.
Donatas’ latest success highlights the talent developing within Wexford’s skateboarding community and the role that facilities such as Min Ryan Skatepark play in providing young people with a place to train, develop their skills and prepare for competitions.
With Donatas now a two-time All-Ireland champion and a two-time winner in Belfast, his achievements are helping to put Wexford’s young skateboarding talent firmly on the map.
His success is also part of a wider story, with a number of young Wexford skaters training, competing and travelling together in pursuit of their own goals in the sport.
For these young athletes, skateboarding is much more than a hobby. It is a sport that demands skill, perseverance and countless hours of practice — and Donatas’ latest national title is a testament to that commitment.
As skateboarding continues to grow in Ireland and internationally, the achievements of Wexford’s young skaters provide a reminder of the sporting talent that exists within the county across a wide range of disciplines.
