Wexford’s Rory O’Connor wins Player of the Match in Australian Football final

Rory O’Connor has been enjoying his time Down Under in Australia since leaving the Sunny South East of Ireland…

Along with enjoying a new city, new people, and a new life — the St Martins’ clubman has also picked up a new sport, following in the footsteps of his first cousin, Barry.

O’Connor was selected as the Best on Ground in the 2026 VAFA Division 2 Men’s Grand Final. The VAFA Division 2 Men’s is a high-level amateur Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The VAFA is the Victorian Amateur Football Association, one of Australia’s major amateur football competitions.

Best on Ground (BOG) means the player judged to have been the best-performing player in the match. In Australian rules football, judges typically consider a player’s possessions and disposals, tackles and defensive work, marks, clearances, goals and scoring involvements, as well as their overall impact on the game and consistency throughout the match when deciding who deserves the Best on Ground award.

It’s not just for someone who scores the most for example.

O’Connor’s club team St Martins have now been placed into the Wexford Senior Football final, while they will take on Rathnure in the Wexford Senior hurling semi-final. If there was ever a perfect time for O’Connor to rejoin the fold, it would be now and the Martins contingent will no doubt be hoping that will be the case.
