Gorey Rotary Club is growing rapidly and is now applying to Rotary International for its own charter after reaching the required membership threshold within its first year….
Since being established last year, the club has operated as a satellite of Wexford Rotary Club. However, receiving its own charter will give Gorey Rotary Club a separate identity, allowing it to operate as a fully independent club and member of Rotary International.
Club President and Elderberry Farm Produce owner Gráinne Kenneally Quirke said:
“We expected to be under the wing of Wexford Rotary for another few years, so it is fantastic to reach the charter threshold within a year. But it’s not surprising I suppose, because Gorey has such a vibrant and supportive business community, and that is exactly what Rotary is all about.”
Members come from a variety of professional and personal backgrounds. While more established Rotary clubs frequently have a large cohort of retired members, Gorey Rotary Club is made up of active business owners and professionals who are keen to network while supporting their local community.
Speaking to Wexford Weekly, Róisín Clancy, Gorey Rotary Club Treasurer and AIB Branch Manager, explained:
“We have members from all parts of the business world. We have some who have been in business for years, and others who have set up more recently. We have some who are Gorey born, and others who have moved into the area. But what we all have in common is a desire to give something back and to support our thriving locality, while making mutually beneficial contacts at the same time.”
Earlier this year, the club introduced the Gorey Young Citizen of the Year Award. The 2027 awards will take place next February, with nominations now open.
An International Women’s Day event focusing on local women in business is also planned for March. The club’s Open Night will return in April, offering an opportunity for people to attend a meeting, learn more about Rotary and meet its members.
Gorey Rotary Club meets on the first Tuesday evening of every month at Saint Aidan’s Services. Anyone interested in joining can contact the club through its Instagram account, @GoreyRotary, or email Club Secretary Patrick Kinsella, owner of Gorey IT Solutions, at secretary@goreyrotary.ie.
Rotary in Ireland operates across the island, with approximately 1,400 members in 67 clubs. Its motto, ‘Service Above Self’, reflects its purpose as a business network with a strong community focus.
