Two Wexford boxers have secured their places in the quarter-finals of the World Under-19 Boxing Championships in Budva, Montenegro after impressive performances representing Ireland…
Kayleigh Byrne of Gorey Boxing Club and Kalib Walshe of Wexford CBS have both progressed to the last eight of the competition, putting themselves within one victory of securing a World Championship medal.
Byrne, competing in the 51kg division, produced another dominant display in her last-16 contest against Shi-Chun Chou of Chinese Taipei. The Gorey boxer secured a second-round referee-stopped contest (RSC) victory, marking her second successive stoppage win at the championships.
The Wexford native had opened her campaign with a stoppage victory over Poland’s Patricia Petriman, forcing three standing counts in the second round before the referee brought the contest to an end. Her latest performance continues an impressive run on the international stage for the three-time European medallist.
Walshe, meanwhile, booked his place in the quarter-finals with a convincing 5-0 points victory over Armenia’s Artur Avetisyan in the 60kg division. The Wexford CBS boxer also forced a standing count during the second round, underlining his control of the contest.
The victory followed another impressive performance in his opening bout, when Walshe defeated Poland’s Gracjan Kolodziedj by unanimous decision, winning every round on all five judges’ scorecards.
Both boxers will return to the ring on Saturday, October 24, as they compete for a place in the semi-finals and the opportunity to guarantee themselves a medal at the championships.
Byrne is scheduled to face Uzbekistan’s Nazokat Mardonova in the 51kg quarter-final during Saturday’s evening session, while Walshe will take on Algeria’s Smail Sahraoui in the 60kg quarter-finals during the afternoon session.
The afternoon session is scheduled to begin at 1pm Irish time, with the evening session starting at 5pm Irish time.
