Walshe through to semi-finals, while Byrne bows out prompting strong reaction

Wexford boxer Kalib Walshe has guaranteed himself at least a bronze medal at the World U19 Boxing Championships after an impressive quarter-final victory for Team Ireland…

The European silver medallist defeated Algeria’s Smail Sahraoui by a unanimous 5-0 decision in the lightweight quarter-final, securing his place in the last four of the prestigious international tournament.

Walshe will return to the ring for Sunday evening’s semi-final session, where he will face Greece’s Nearchos Petros Konstantinoudis as he bids to book his place in the final.

The achievement marks another significant milestone for the talented young boxer, who continues to make his mark on the international stage while representing Ireland with distinction.

Meanwhile, Kayleigh Byrne of Gorey Boxing Club bowed out of the championships after a narrow 3-2 split-decision defeat in her lightweight quarter-final against Uzbekistan’s Nazokat Mardonova. The result ended the Wexford boxer’s hopes of securing a World Championship medal, despite an impressive run to the last eight.

The defeat has prompted a strong reaction from Gorey Boxing Club, who expressed their frustration with the judges’ decision and raised concerns about the integrity of the sport. The club claimed Byrne had been robbed of victory and voiced criticism of what they described as corruption in boxing.

Despite the disappointment, Byrne can take considerable pride in her performances in Budva, having recorded successive stoppage victories earlier in the tournament and further underlining her standing as one of Ireland’s promising young boxing talents.
