Wexford Science Festival to return for 2026

Wexford Science Festival, WexSci, is back with an extended programme of free and ticketed events from November 7 to 15 for everyone from primary school pupils to adult and community group audiences right across the county.

This year’s Science Week theme explores ‘Water: From Molecule to Ocean’ and where better to celebrate such a thread than in Wexford which features many of Ireland’s finest beaches and coastal areas.

All the events throughout WexSci, are coordinated by Calmast, the South East Technological University’s STEM engagement centre in partnership with Wexford County Council and with support from Research Ireland which is running Science Week on a national scale and coordinating hundreds of events designed to encourage everyone to think more about and celebrate science in our everyday lives.

Speaking ahead of this year’s festival, Calmast’s co-founder and Director, Eoin Gill, said: “Last year’s Festival exceeded all of our expectations, and it broke all previous attendance records. We’ve worked very closely with our supporters and presenters to add interesting and relevant workshops, presentations, and events to this year’s programme, many of them focused on our theme, Water.

“Schools, libraries, the stunning National Opera House, outdoor venues and more will be a hive of activity throughout the Festival. I’d strongly encourage members of the public to log on to www.wexfordsciencefestival.ie now and book their free places.

“We’re delighted to have many of our top local and international presenters back yet again, as well as new faces and new events. Stand-out events include Water Molecules and Gems, Algorithms and Social Media consumption, adult chess and a not-to-be-missed ‘Storms, Sunshine and Surprises’ workshop with former forecaster, Joanna Donnelly.”

Calmast coordinates Wexford Science Festival in partnership with a host of local bodies and organisations, chief among them Wexford County Council, libraries, SETU’s Wexford campus, the EPA, Waterford-Wexford Education and Training Board, Wexford Local Development Agency, National Opera House, employers, and community groups across the county.

Dr Diarmuid O’Brien, CEO of Research Ireland, said:

“Science Week is an opportunity each year for a national, intergenerational conversation on a topic of relevance to research and innovation. Water is both simple and complex, connecting so many aspects of our lives, from our health and the environment to energy, technology, and beyond. Understanding water better can help us make more informed choices about how we consume and conserve this vital resource today, tomorrow, and beyond,” he said.

Dr Ruth Freeman, Director of Research for Society at Research Ireland, told Wexford Weekly:

“The annual success and impact of Science Week is due to the energy and commitment of the people who bring it to life in cities, towns, and villages. Across Ireland, organisers, researchers and volunteers will create opportunities for people to encounter science in new ways, and to see how research directly connects with the challenges and opportunities facing society,” Dr Freeman concluded.
