We Chat With A Wexford Teenager Who Is Honing In On His Musical Talents

One Wexford teenager managed to make the most of his self-isolation when he wrote a song…

Ballycanew native Darragh Byrne has been writing songs since he was 16, but has dived deep into singing and playing his guitar during COVID-19 lockdowns.

“When I was in Gorey Community School, I liked writing and playing music. In 2016, I wrote my first song dedicated to my grandparents’ 50th wedding anniversary. After playing Jean Van Jean in my school’s production of Les Miserables in 2018, I realised how much I enjoyed music and I knew it was something I’d pursue.

It’s only during the COVID-19 pandemic that Darragh had the chance to knuckle down and focus on his talents.

“Back in January, I had COVID-19. Since I wasn’t sick with it, I decided to write a song on a whim called Hey Debbie. I just took the notion after watching the movie Baby Driver where Debora says there aren’t any songs about Debbie.”

“I like coming up with my own songs instead of covers. I wrote Figure Me Out at a time when I was figuring things out as a 19-year-old choosing to do an apprenticeship instead of going to college.”

“My Spotify single I’m Waiting is about my grandparents and how we really look forward to having proper contact with our grandparents once the risks of COVID-19 are gone away.”

“My friends and family have been really supportive of me and I’m going to keep writing and singing and see where it takes me. I’d love to start gigging when the restrictions have been lifted.”
