Young Wexford woman crowned All-Ireland u-18 boxing champion

A Wexford woman was crowned All-Ireland u-18 boxing champion yesterday evening…

Siofra Kenny, who is from Craanfrod in Wexford, was crowned the u-18 lightweight boxing champion at the National Stadium last night.

Kenny fights out of Curadh Boxing Club, which was opened in Carnew less than three years ago in 2021.

In the final, Siofra defeated Georgia Stewart who boxes out of Darndale Boxing Club in Dublin.

After her success, she was welcomed back to a heroes welcome at Kenny’s Corner House, where she was cheered on by family, friends and members of the community.

It’s only the start for Kenny though, who only took up boxing two years ago under the watchful eye of her coach and father, Darragh Kenny.

Her win at the National Stadium yesterday evening puts her in the running for qualification for European Championships later this year, where she will travel to Croatia to stake her claim.

Kenny wasn’t the only boxer to claim silverware at the National Stadium last night.

Both Enniscorthy’s Ellie May Mahon (82kg) and Rosslare’s 44kg Emily Midwinter were crowned National champions after they received walk-overs by their opponents. Another Wexford girl, Nicole Kinsella of St Mary’s in New Ross was successful on the national stage. Kinsella defeated Niamh Keogh in the 54kg division. All girls are now on the road to qualify for the European Championships.
