Sinn Fein Wexford announce new candidate for Local Elections

Wexford Sinn Féin have announced a new candidate for the local elections…

Kayley Goodison has been announced as a Local Election candidate for the New Ross area for June 2024.

Speaking on Sunday morning, Ms Goodison has said that she wants to bring a new, vibrant and empathetic voice to New Ross if she is to be elected to Wexford County Council. Ms Goodison, a proud Irish Republican and a Sinn Féin activist since her teens, has lived and worked in New Ross for the majority of her adult life.

Speaking to Wexford Weekly, Ms Goodison said:

“I have seen first hand the real issues that have frustrated the community in both urban and rural areas in New Ross, and witnessing these issues have helped me determine my main priorities if I were to be elected for the New Ross area in the upcoming Election.

“I am very keen to work for better availability and easily accessible mental health and disability services, both of which are something New Ross dramatically needs, as waiting times for HSE services have gone beyond what any reasonable person would tolerate, and many families are really struggling with this reality. Private counseling is too expensive for many to avail of and many people in the New Ross district have to avail of many health services in Waterford and Wexford town, some even traveling to Carlow, which is just not good enough.”

Along with fellow Sinn Féin candidates, Kayley also stated that housing and the lowering of rents would be of high importance, as well as services for the young people of the area.

“There is an urgent need for New Ross to continue building social housing and finally giving more people and families alike a home to call their own, to put down permanent roots and even grow old in. Being a young woman myself, I have seen the impact of the lack of services and recreational indoor facilities for young people, especially under 18s. If somebody does not drive or have a vehicle there is no way to access clubs and societies outside school hours and the cost is often too much for many parents to stretch to during the cost of living crisis.

“I’m afraid this issue goes hand in hand with the lack of public transport from rural areas into the town centre of New Ross. If there was a regular New Ross region bus service it would be ideal for the youth, elderly and working people. I also feel that farmers and workers in rural areas have been let down considerably and I do hope to advocate strongly that more incentives should be introduced for them as I feel that they are the backbone of the rural community in New Ross.”

Although disappointed that she will no longer be running alongside her local colleague Marie Doyle following her decision not to contest the election last week, Kayley has said she is “is excited to work closely alongside the Sinn Féin Wexford team and particularly with Wexford Sinn Féin TD, Johnny Mythen to deliver a real change for the people of New Ross.”
